將這句話翻譯成英語，自然可以譯作：

這個譯法當然是不錯的，但是不是可以翻譯得更簡潔明快一些呢？仔細推敲原文的文意層次，就可以看出，句中的三層意思其實是層層遞進，一氣呵成的。翻譯成三個獨立的簡單句，似乎割裂了原文的神韻氣質。根據這樣的分析，我們似可將譯文修改如下：
Traditional Chinese medicine, an indispensable part of the Chinese culture with a history of thousands of years, was established on the basis of the long�term experience of the Chinese people in dealing with diseases.

這個譯文基本也是通順的，但從文法上看，似乎還可以再加簡潔。原文是一個復合句，譯文將其劃分為兩個獨立的句子。這樣的處理自然無可非議，但似乎讀起來不夠簡練。從中文來講，先介紹中醫學的功用，再言其特點與特色，是很合理的。但從英文來看，反其道而行之更為可取。比如，我們可以將上文改譯如下：
Traditional Chinese medicine, a science with unique theory and rich clinical experience, studies the physiological functions and pathological changes of human body as well as the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases.
比較兩個譯文，就用詞數量而言，前者似乎比後者更簡潔。但從結構上看，後者因為使用了同位語結構，所以顯得比較自然流暢。而且後者將physiology和pathology轉化為形容詞physiological 和pathological，且增加了functions和changes，使得physiology和pathology的含義由抽象而具體，其語義也隨之變得明確起來。
例3 在古代的唯物論和辯證法思想的影響和指導下，通過長期的醫療實踐，它逐步形成並發展成為獨特的醫學理論體系，為中國人民的保健事業和中華民族的繁衍昌盛作出了巨大的貢獻。

在這個譯文中，有些中文的表達方式，其實可以稍微輕化一些。比如「在古代的唯物論和辯證法思想的影響和指導下」，似乎譯出一個「影響」就足矣。再將「指導」譯出，就顯得有些「擬人化」了。當然，「擬人化」在文學作品中是必不可少的，但在這里，似乎不必追求如此效果。畢竟我們翻譯的是醫學資料，不是文學作品。另外，「繁衍昌盛」在這里的基本意思是講中華民族的發展問題，似不必逐字翻譯，總括譯作development即可。
綜上所述，上面這則譯文似可改譯如下：

總體上看，這個譯文似無大礙，跟中文相比，好像還挺對應。但讀起來卻覺艱澀，缺乏流暢之感。對於這樣排比似的中文結構，翻譯時宜將其語義稍加調整，以便在行文時靈活布局安排。試改譯如下：
The idea of organic wholeness plays a dominant role in traditional Chinese medicine, which, physiologically and pathologically based on the states of the viscera and channels, is mainly characterized by treatment according to syndrome differentiation.

由此例可以看出，翻譯時切入點不同，譯文便因之有異，但基本意思卻可保持不變。所以方法與技巧是靈活的，絕非一成不變。
例6 它一方面用當代的先進哲學思想為指導，從而推動了醫學科學的發展，另一方面又在醫學科學發展的基礎上，豐富和提高了哲學理論。

這段話摘自高等中醫葯院校教材《中醫基礎理論》，講的是《黃帝內經》的內容與作用。但仔細推敲中文，有些用詞似乎不夠確切。如說它用「當代的先進哲學思想為指導」，「當代」是什麼概念（可能是「當時」之誤吧。）？說它「推動了醫學科學的發展」，「科學」又是什麼概念？先秦的醫學可以稱作「科學」嗎？
中文作者為什麼使用這些幾乎是極度誇張的詞語來論述《內經》呢？不得而知。但我們在翻譯時，似乎不必不折不扣地按原文字面之意從譯。否則譯文便顯得有些怪異。先秦時期的著作怎麼會使用「當代的先進哲學思想」呢？本著實事求是的原則，焦村先生曾將譯文修改如下：
It adopted advanced philosophical ideas then to promote the progress of medicine on the one hand, and on the other, enriching and improving philosophical doctrines with the development of medicine.
比較原文和兩個譯文，我覺得譯文似乎還可以再深化一步，以便使其精神實質更加具體。所謂「當代的先進哲學思想為指導，從而推動了醫學科學的發展」，實際上強調的是陰陽、五行學說在中醫基本理論體系構建中的作用。而「又在醫學科學發展的基礎上，豐富和提高了哲學理論」，實際上強調的是醫學發展對哲學進步的促進作用。基於這樣的考慮，譯文還可以作如下修改：
With the adoption of philosophical ideas then, the theory of medicine was systematized; with the development of medicine, the doctrine of philosophy was enriched.
